Session Description

3:00-4:00 – Dillon Consulting Rural Transit Handbook
Transit systems in rural and small communities continue to face pressure to grow and evolve. An aging population, increased immigration and migration and high cost of living is resulting in a higher demand for service, while funding continues to be a barrier. There are a growing number of municipalities that have never had transit are assessing its feasibility, while municipalities that have been operating transit for decades are seeing a pressure to expand. To aid in these challenges, we will discuss a new Rural Transit Toolkit, designed to provide valuable insights for transit managers when:
– Assessing the feasibility of a new service
– Designing a service
– Operating a service
This will be followed up by a facilitated discussion led by Dennis Kar, who is co-author of the Rural Transit Handbook. There will be a short presentation of the Handbook at first to discuss how it can be used and built upon. There will then be a facilitated discussion where peers will share their experiences starting a new service, maintain operations with funding short-falls, and transitioning service to meet changing realities.

4:00-5:00 – Round Table Topics
– CVOR and Safety Ratings
